One needs to understand that not just health care expenditure, tuition costs are going up too. A medical emergency requiring hospitalization for a considerable period of time might just be unaffordable for most people. It can be very difficult to pick between continuing your education or your health care.
Many students do not buy health insurance coverage either because they can't afford to or they just decide to take their chances.
The first category of students often find it difficult to pay the exorbitant costs of health care in USA, and might literally be forced into bankruptcy and/or dropping out. A conscious effort needs to be made to buy some basic coverage, to be prepared in the eventuality of an illness that might have destructive effects on your course.
For the second category, it is advisable to seriously consider buying medical insurance for emergency situations. The risk is just not worth it. A penny saved in premiums might cost you pounds later.
