When on OPT status, it is a good idea to buy OPT insurance, although not required by law. It does not matter whether or not you have a job. Several future options exist for the prudent student.
After two years in a university setting, you know a lot about academia, and a doctoral program may be worth considering. Many industries look for doctoral candidates for jobs, and opting for this does not mean you are confined to the walls of a university. In this case, international student medical insurance will have to be purchased.
As far as OPT goes, check whether your discipline is eligible for the extended OPT period of 29 months. If that does not pan out, you can still take the OPT six months at a time. Regardless, OPT insurance is almost a necessity, and if you are looking for coverage for less than six months, several inexpensive plans such as Atlas America and Liaison Majestic are available.
