International students with adequate international student health insurance are hesitating to graduate in this economy. With no clear sign of the economy recovering, students who do graduate are also left wondering about future plans. It is natural to ignore insurance in this situation, but that is a dangerous move.

When on OPT status, it is a good idea to buy OPT insurance, although not required by law. It does not matter whether or not you have a job. Several future options exist for the prudent student.

After two years in a university setting, you know a lot about academia, and a doctoral program may be worth considering. Many industries look for doctoral candidates for jobs, and opting for this does not mean you are confined to the walls of a university. In this case, international student medical insurance will have to be purchased.

As far as OPT goes, check whether your discipline is eligible for the extended OPT period of 29 months. If that does not pan out, you can still take the OPT six months at a time.
