  • Do I Need International Student Insurance?

If you are planning to study abroad and come to the U.S. you will be required to obtain international student health insurance. Nearly every college and university will require proof of this insurance when you are filling out your admission forms. Schools and universities want to be sure that their students are going to be taken care of in the event they need medical attention.

Many schools offer international student insurance through them. When making your plans to purchase insurance, check with the college or university you will be attending. You may find that insurance through the school might be less expensive because the insurance carrier they use will be giving a group discount.

While checking with the admissions office about medical insurance, be sure to ask about the requirements for the necessary health insurance. When learning about insurance, you will find that there are several different ‘levels’ of coverage. If you want to look at different insurance carriers, you have to be sure that you choose the level of coverage that the college/university requires.

Not only is medical insurance a requirement at colleges and universities, it is truly a necessity. Everyone gets sick at some point and needs to see a doctor. Accidents happen at the most inopportune times and you probably won’t have enough cash on hand to pay for medical services. It is a relief if you can simply hand them your international student health insurance card and know that the fees are covered.
