  • How to avoid being homesick and make the best of your stay abroad

The first week of your stay as an international student in a foreign land is always exciting. You’re anxious, you’re excited, you’re scared and what not. You experience a mix of emotions. All your energies are focused on overcoming these emotions and settling in the new country.

Once you get past this stage is when home sickness starts to set in. This is when you start missing those tasty morning coffees and breakfasts that mom never fails to treat you with, every morning of the twenty years or more at home.

Here’s one quick tip to avoid this dreaded period. Plan first month abroad as a international student well ahead. Let there not be too much spare time at least during the first 3 to 4 weeks. The basic idea behind planning a busy first month is to keep your mind occupied on matters not concerning your family or home. Of course, family is important, but there will be plenty of time to think about them and talk to them during your long stay abroad.

As long as you get the basic idea of keeping yourself busy, you can, however, still incorporate timeslots for short chats and talks with family into your schedule.
