  • When Personal Issues Arise, Students Need Trip Cancellation Insurance

Personal problems derail travel plans all the time. From family issues to obligations at a job or internship, there are many events that can throw a wrench in a student's travel schedule. To make sure these issues don't leave a dent in your wallet, make sure you have trip cancellation insurance.

Since airlines are on tighter budgets than ever the last few years, they have become less and less forgiving and flexible about working with consumers when problems arise. It can be extremely difficult to get re-booked if you need to re-schedule a flight, unless you are willing to pay significant extra fees. In most cases, cancelling one flight and booking another will cost you at least double your original ticket.

Not many people have that kind of extra money these days, and as a student you certainly do not. There are some precautions you can take to minimize the risk of having to cancel a flight, but let's face it, you cannot safeguard against every potential problem. That is where trip cancellation insurance comes into play.

Most international student travel insurance policies will allow you to add in trip cancellation riders. These will allow you to cancel a trip with very little notice (sometimes as little as 24 hours) without incurring significant additional charges or losing the money you spent on your original ticket. This type of insurance is quite inexpensive, especially when compared with the cost of replacing airlines tickets, hotel accommodations, and anything else you bought in advance of your trip.
